Barb Rocks - Optional Extra Post :)

I ask Barb to come speak to this class every year and she graciously agrees. Because she shared so much with us today, what were two or three things you'll see yourself trying out in the near future with your students?

I especially loved that Barb advocated for the use of digital cameras and publication of the photos. I'm going to play around with my iphoto and garageband this summer to get ready to use them in the classroom.

I also know I'll be using her links to search tools for the kids- especially Factmonster and Enchanted Learning.

I'd really like to learn how to use Skype. Two of our book club members moved; one to Minnesota and the other to Boston. The one in Minnesota knows how to use Skype and some of my friends with family in Hawaii use it, too. I think this summer will be a good chance to learn some of those tools.

I want to try BookCrossing, too, which is kind of like the Travel Bugs she talked about.

Photo Story 3 is also on my list to try since it's free & I can use it in my personal life, too.

The more I can make all these relevant to myself out of school as well, the better I'll get to know the tool. That's my plan, anyway.

Barb was amazing and my head was spinning with the plethora of info she gave us. PhotoStory looks promising. I love the graphic organizer links she included.

I'd like to create a teacher website with resource links. My summer project before I head back to the classroom is to look at Barb's social studies resources, the webpage format and see what I can do. It would be a great resource for students and parents.

I also want to play around with iPhoto and Garageband....maybe a presentation idea? I was disappointed that Photo Story is not MAC compatible but I think I can figure out something else to use. I think Barb's website is a great resource. I'd like to look at it again since I was on information overload towards the end of her presentation.

I'd to do more searching on Clusty and Google Kids and Teens, adapt the ReadWriteThink lessons on comprehending nonfiction Web text, use the graphic organizer pages, try Web Poster Wizard and Photo Story 3, and, like Shelly, develop a classroom web page with resource links.

Barb's visit was fabulous. I agree with Richard in that I can't wait to use Clusty to help students get relevant information for their searches. I also would love to follow her idea bring parents in for workshops on the technology being used. If parents are on our side, maybe some of the current barriers could be lifted. I am also certain that I will incorporate some of her links into my pathfinders. Great day!

I agree with Cate and Heather in that Photo Story 3 is an excellent resource and since it's free, why not take advantage?

I was particularly impressed with Barb's resources for research. Not only is she great at providing the search tools, but also the curriculum to help kiddos be information literate.

By the way folks, I read two articles tonight for Assignment 2 that discuss educating teachers to use technology. Both articles attest that teachers need to START WITH SMALL STEPS. It made me feel a lot better, because when I compared myself to Barb today, I felt about two inches tall!

Yes, Barb has some pretty incredible things on her site. ANd she is a pretty dynamic person. I can almost see her with the kids.
I appreciate her social studies links - on the states and currecnt event resources.
I am also a big proponent in students questions - I want them to ask questions more than I want them to know all of the answers.
There are a couple of graphic organizers on Barb's site that could help foster this. They're in the Lang. Arts section - under Graphic Organizers.
